ADVERTISING SPECIALTY & BUTTON MANUFACTURERS
Large 2-1/8” very unusual button made by process utilized briefly c. 1915 by W&H Co. Image is of orange poppies, red poinsettia, green bkg. leaves and orange fruit on very deep green bkg. with the lettering in reflective gold and including “County Of Fruit And Flowers.” The have a depth and extra dimension to them from this process which used colored foil papers beneath the celluloid covering and over the design embossed into the backing metal. While this example is missing the W&H backpaper which names the process, it does include the original Western Badge & Button Co., Los Angeles paper as they must have purchased them wholesale from W&H for a customer. The celluloid surface has a circular line about .25” in from the outer edge. The line has some slight cloudiness to it, but is smooth. It seems to have occurred in the lamination process. It shows just in certain reflected light angles. Viewed normally, the button looks Mint. We’ve seen only 5 designs that used this process due to its high cost. One for Metropolitan Life Insurance Co., two for early movie serial Neal of the Navy and one for another city. Scarce.
